40 Thoughts I Had While Rereading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Summary from Goodreads:

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike

And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone — or something — starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects . . . Harry Potter himself?

This review is not spoiler free.

“Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.”

Hi, friends! I am making my way through this Harry Potter reread far slower than I expected due to life events, but all that matters is that I am still enjoying it, which I am. I also really enjoyed keeping track of the thoughts I was having while reading with the first one, so I thought I would do that again. Once again, there are spoilers for the second book ahead. Like, so many spoilers. All the spoilers. Be warned, my friends.

Now, here are the thoughts I had while reading Chamber of Secrets!

  1. It’s page 2 and I am ready to fight the Dursleys. Like, what makes them think they can treat Harry the way they do? Who do they think they are?
  2. “I’ll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending I’m not there.” Why is that me when the kids my mom babysits are here so I don’t have to come down and put up with them?
  3. “Well done, so you’ve finally learned the days of the week.” Harry James Potter, a twelve (!) year old icon.
  4. I love how Harry’s guesses are Voldemort, then some random brother of his. Like, that’s it. That’s his list.
  5. I like Dobby, but I feel like he could have smoothed this whole situation out better than he did, you know?
  6. The Dursleys and I are going to have words. Literally locking a child in a room? Not okay, my dudes.
  7. I love Molly Weasley. The comparison of her to a saber toothed tiger is and will always be iconic.
  8. Gilderoy Lockhart has only been mentioned once and I’m already tired of him.
  9. I wonder if these gnomes are the equivalent annoyance to the groundhogs under our old coop.
  10. Harry saying the burrow is the best home he’s been in 💜💙💜
  11. Arthur Weasley’s fansication with muggles is honestly amazing.
  12. “Potter, you’ve got yourself a girlfriend!” Just you wait, Malfoy, just you wait.
  13. Okay, but can we talk about how you have to make sure no muggles see you vanish at King’s Cross? Like, do the wizard world officials think anything through? Ever?
  14. “section nineteen or something of the Restriction of Thingy” well, with firm backing like that, I can’t imagine why anyone would refuse.
  15. Okay, so heads of houses decide if you get expelled? Not the headmaster? Does this seem normal to everyone else or like is it just a me thing to think that is completely weird?
  16. I know that Neville meant well, but I feel like he should have told Ron to take the howler to his room to open it, not in front of the entire school at breakfast.
  17. “A few people have heard of you, haven’t they?” Just a few, Lockhart, just a few.
  18. “they haven’t invented a spell our Hermione can’t do” 💜💙💜
  19. First detention was going into the forbidden forest at midnight, now it’s addressing fanmail? Very interesting.
  20. I’m with Ron on this one, a deathday party does seem kind of depressing but I guess if he wants to celebrate it, let him celebrate it.
  21. I love how they just casually have a ghost teacher.
  22. I love how Ron basically just said “bold of you to assume I’d listen to Snape in potions” to Hermione, iconic.
  23. Why is this school and just parents in general letting twelve year olds play a sport where broken arms are no big deal? Though I guess we do let eight year olds play football so.
  24. Is threatening your house elf’s life like five times a day legal? I feel like it shouldn’t be legal.
  25. “What, drop my wand?” An icon, 110%
  26. I love how Harry’s plan to handle Dumbledore’s bird catching on fire was to throw a glass of water on it, an icon.
  27. Wouldn’t you think that with students getting attacked, someone at the ministry would come to investigate? Or do all of the wizarding higher ups really just say screw those children?
  28. I have been thinking about how I don’t have many thoughts about this one because it is my least favorite book in the series but also I am reading it super fast now that I actually started reading it again.
  29. “How many monsters do you think this thing can hold?” Well, this school is pretty big so I would say more than one.
  30. “When in doubt, go to the library.” I cannot believe that tumblr has made me think this was a Hermione quote when it was said by Ron, that is unacceptable.
  31. “Harry had inherited just one thing from this father” I suppose the messy black hair and the mountain of gold just don’t count?
  32. Shouldn’t someone have made someone get Ron a new wand by now?
  33. What was Dumbledore thinking when he hired Lockhart? I feel like that squid in the lake would have been better than him.
  34. Did someone tell Hermione’s parents she was petrified? If so, what did they think about it? Like, they are muggles, what would they think of that news?
  35. Why does no one ever talk about all that Ginny went through in this book? She was 11 years old for goodness sake, the poor girl.
  36. I would like to know some of the other names that were on the drawing board before he settled on Voldemort.
  37. I love how Dumbledore’s first thought is to have a feast. Was no one feeding him while he was gone?
  38. The fact that Hogwarts gets their teachers from want ads in the daily prophet makes sense.
  39. Was there ever a reason given for why Dobby was so determined to protect Harry? Like I’m glad but was there?
  40. Since Hagrid was proven innocent, shouldn’t he get something? Like he was expelled for something he didn’t do so his wand was taken away. Give him a new one, let him take some nighttime Hogwarts classes, something. It’s what he deserves. #justiceforHagrid2k19

    1. Thank you so much, Emme!! I totally didn’t think about Hagrid’s situation as a kid, but now I realize that he was really screwed over? Like, someone give this poor man a wand and some magic lessons.

  1. I absolutely adore the way you’re going about this reread of the HARRY POTTER series with posts of your thoughts as you read! I’ve been wanting to reread them & write full-length reviews on each one, since I never have before, but I haven’t been able to yet!
