People Who Haven’t Read TSC Guess If Quotes are Real or Fake

Hello, guys, gals, and non-binary pals. My name is Arin and I personally have this fun problem where I can’t stop rereading Cassandra Clare books. It’s a really bad problem actually, I think I read The Mortal Instruments six times last year. Whoops?

Anyways, it has recently come to my attention that not everyone has this problem. In fact, there are a lot of people who haven’t even read a Cassandra Clare book. Once I got over this mind blowing realization, I starting thinking about how weird some lines from this series can be if they are taken out of context. From that line of thought came this blog post.

I tweeted asking if anyone who hadn’t read Cassandra Clare books would want to look at a list of ten quotes and guess which ones were real or fake and two amazing ladies, Brittany from Brittany the Book Guru and Xandra from Starry Sky Books, responded and agreed to play along. Today, in honor of Isabella Lightwood’s birthday, I am sharing their answers!

Now that I’ve typed an intro that’s way too long, I’ll share my quotes, their answers, and if the quote was real or not!

I. “You want tomato soup and a mango for dinner?”

Brittany’s answer: I’m gonna say that this is really from the book, solely because it’s so weird and random that I can’t imagine you could’ve pulled it out of thin air.

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: It is indeed real! This quote is from City of Fallen Angels and takes place in a grocery store.

II. “The Queen says it is an exact duplicate. It was made with the assistance of a wizard of great power called OfficeMax, of whom I know nothing.”

Brittany’s answer: I’m guessing that this isn’t really from the book because “OfficeMax” sounds totally made up (though I guess the entire book is made up by the author but.. ya know… semantics).

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: This one is real too! It is from Queen of Air and Darkness.

III. “Lily shook her head. ‘The 1930s were such a disappointment. Every year, they insisted on not being the 1920s.’”

Brittany’s answer: Hmmm. Real??

Xandra’s answer: Fake

Real or fake?: This one is real again! It is from a short story called The Land I Lost, which is full of all sorts of iconic lines and quality content.

IV. “‘Excuse you,’ Magnus said, ‘I’m both older and more fabulous than Julius Caesar.’”

Brittany’s answer: I’m also going to guess that this one is really from the book as well. I haven’t read it but I feel like every book needs a quirky, outspoken character who says stuff like this. So, if this isn’t real, it should be.

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: This one is actually fake! It came from the brain of Arin, though it was expired by a line in The Bane Chronicles about how Magnus constantly lies about how old he is to make himself sound more impressive.

V. “‘My grandfather was a worm, if that’s what you mean,’ Anna said.

Ariadne laughed aloud. ‘You didn’t like him?’

‘I didn’t know him,’ Anna said. ‘He was, quite literally, a worm.’”

Brittany’s answer: Literally a worm? There’s no way. I say fake.

Xandra’s answer: Fake

Real or fake?: Believe it or not, this one is real. It comes from a short story called Every Exquisite Thing  which is all about the amazing Anna Lightwood. I would love to give more context for this quote but the context is kind of spoiler-y so I can’t.

VI. “If your name isn’t James Carstairs, Church isn’t interested in being your friend, or even liking you in the slightest.”

Brittany’s answer: My lack of context makes this one a little difficult. It’s vague, so I’m gonna say it’s real.

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: This one is actually fake! It is inspired by many DMs between Brianna and I all about how Church (a cat) only likes Jem Carstairs and how that is relatable content.

VII. “‘Why are you wearing a T-shirt under your other T-shirt?’” Livvy asked.

‘In case one of them is stolen,’ Mark said, as it were entirely normal.”

Brittany’s answer: I’m assuming this is real but I also wanted to add that I love the logic behind this. He’s not wrong.

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: This is real! It is from Lady Midnight and it is one of Mark Blackthorn’s most Iconic quotes in my opinion.

VIII. “‘They’re here right now?’ Clary sputtered. ‘But – I’m wearing a T-shirt that says ‘Unicorn Power’”

Brittany’s answer: I want this to be real

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: This is indeed real! It is also from Queen of Air and Darkness and it made it onto this list because I am obligated to mention Clary Fairchild at least once per post.

IX. “Tessa smiled, ‘Why would I settle for less than the best?’’

Brittany’s answer: I don’t know Tessa but I’m going to assume this is really from the book, only because I love characters who recognize they are worth more than settling.

Xandra’s answer: Fake

Real or fake?: This one is actually fake. I was going for a somewhat normal quote to try and balance out all of the other quotes on this list.

X. “And nobody will let you have your own kid until you stop putting other people’s kids in bags meant for axes and trying to smuggle them out on patrol.”

Brittany’s answer: Wait… what? Bags of axes? Please tell me this is not real.

Xandra’s answer: Real

Real or fake?: I am sorry to say this Brittany, but this one is real. It is also from The Land I Lost, though I can confirm that the child mentioned in the quote is perfectly fine (and he had better stay that way or I will fight).

Okay, that’s the end of the game lol. I would like to thank both Brittany and Xandra so so much for participating and indulging one of my ridiculous ideas! I hope that Isabelle Lightwood has a great birthday and that this post was at least mildly entertaining to others and not just me. What did you think of this game? Let’s chat in the comments!

  1. I love this post 😂 Thank you so much for letting me participate! It was so fun, and I was totally clueless about what would be real or fake. If I counted right, I only got 4 correct… which isn’t even 50% but totally excusable since I’ve never read any of the books 😂 You did a great job at picking out which lines to give us! It was honestly hard trying to figure it all out haha. But this was a great idea!!

      1. I thought it was super interesting! Having never read these books before, I had/have no idea what they are about, so this was a really fun guessing game. I’ve been trying to think of some books I could do something like this with. Your content ideas always inspire me!!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it!! I had to stop myself from letting half of the real quotes be from Mark because I thought here was a slight chance that would give it away lol.

  2. Haha, thanks for inlcuding me in this post! I tried to answer the best I could, but I honestly know so little about the series that I felt like every answer just had a 50/50 chance! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But I think I got 6 of them right, so that just shows I’m good at guessing! 😂 It was a lot of fun, and I would totally be willing to do it again for another series!
